In a “Run and Gun”, “Lob and Dunk”, play a little “D” (or not) All-Star game, Jordan East beat Jordan West 131-117 in Brooklyn’s Barclay Center. Twenty of the best players (minus 4 notable exceptions Lonzo Ball (UCLA), Josh Jackson (Kansas), Terrence Ferguson (Arizona), and Duke-commit Javin DeLaurier) from the class of 2016 showed off their considerable skill sets. My question is, ” How many ‘lob and dunks’ do we have to endure before the audience sees a creative pass?” There were no Larry Bird no-look, behind the head passes, nor was there any instant fast break recognition ala Jason Kidd or Kendall Marshall. Lonzo Ball has that ability, but he did not play in Brooklyn.
The game was marred by 2 serious first half injuries. First, Alterique Gilbert suffered an apparent dislocated shoulder trying to steal the ball from Marques Bolden. Then Frank Jackson took a very awkward fall after getting tangled up with Bruce Brown. Jackson had to be helped off the floor with concussion type symptoms. Neither player returned to action and the game appeared to take a gentler approach after Jackson’s injury.
In typical All-Star game fashion, the “bigs” rarely saw the ball down low. That said, Tony Bradley, Marques Bolden and Omari Spellman still showed more than enough positioal skills that will transfer to their college careers. 3 of Kentucky’s signees (Monk, Adebayo and Fox) were very impressive. Mich. State’s pair of Bridges and Winston hooked up nicely on several Lob and Dunks. Coach Izzo is reloading for another deep run into the 2017 tourney.
USA Basketball is in great shape on the Wing. Even without the absent Josh Jackson and Terrance Ferguson, no country has a talented group of young wings like Monk, Fultz, Tatum, King, and Bridges. The points lack pure shooters as Ball, Gilbert, Ponds & Winston are not Zone Busters. Fortunately, Fultz & Jackson are combo guards who are ‘Lights Out’ shooters!!
Thank you Class of 2016 for a very impressive year. Now on to Nike’s EYBL, Under Armour, Adidas Summer circuit and the NBPA Top 100 camp. The best go on as the Class of 2017 takes center stage.
